Start at the beginning, free

The first unit’s lessons — reading, listening, writing and speaking — are free with an account, no card needed.

Full access from €16.58 a month, paid yearly (€199). The 7-day free trial needs a card to start.

You book the A2 exams and KNM yourself in Mijn Inburgering, with your DigiD, and DUO says to allow more than six weeks between booking and the exam. You book the B1 or B2 state exam in MijnDUO, also with your DigiD, about eight weeks ahead. On the day, bring a valid ID: without one you cannot sit the exam.

The steps are short. What goes wrong is usually timing, so this article puts the dates first.

Before you book

  • Have a working DigiD. Both booking sites use it. If you cannot log in, there is a paper form for the A2 exams and KNM.
  • Know which exams you need, and at which level. Your personal plan and Mijn Inburgering show it. If you are unsure, read which level and route are yours first.
  • Check your ID. Look at its expiry date now, not the night before the exam.
  • Arrange the PVT and, if your route has it, the MAP with your municipality. The PVT is the participation statement course and the MAP is the labour-market module. They are arranged with your municipality (gemeente), not with DUO.

Booking A2 and KNM

  1. Log in to Mijn Inburgering with your DigiD.
  2. Choose the date and the place.
  3. You receive a confirmation by e-mail and by letter.
  4. About one week before the exam, a letter arrives with the place and the time.

Allow more than six weeks between booking and the exam date.

Booking the state exam, B1 and B2

The B1 and B2 language exams are the state exam Dutch as a second language. You book it through MijnDUO with your DigiD, about eight weeks before.

  • Where: there are six exam cities: Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle. You cannot take the state exam abroad or online.
  • How you pay: by iDEAL or on an invoice. If you must integrate, you can pay from a DUO loan, if you can borrow, or use a free attempt, if you have one.
  • After a fail: you can sit a failed part again, but you can register for a new sitting only after you have received the result.

The state exam does not include KNM. KNM is a separate DUO exam, booked in Mijn Inburgering.

Changing or cancelling

For the A2 exams and KNM you can change the date or the place in Mijn Inburgering until one week before the exam.

If you cancel up to seven days before, you get a refund. You can still delete a registration up to one day before, but then there is no refund and a free attempt is used up.

For the state exam, if the reason is illness or bereavement, you can ask for a postponement within ten days after the exam, with proof. For any other change, read the state exam's page on cancelling an exam.

On the day

  • Bring a valid ID. DUO's rules say you cannot sit an exam without one.
  • At the A2 exams and KNM, arrive 30 minutes early. This is the rule in DUO's examination regulations. For the state exam, check the arrival time on the state exam's own pages.
  • A2 language exams: there are fifteen minutes of explanation before each one. That time is not exam time.
  • Writing at A2 is on paper. There are four assignments.

At the state exam you may bring one paper dictionary, the Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek NT2, but only for reading and writing.

When you get your result

For the A2 exams and KNM your result comes by letter, and you can see it in Mijn Inburgering. DUO says it takes up to eight weeks. Since 31 July 2026 A2 speaking and writing can take up to sixteen weeks. If you are close to the end of your term while you wait, DUO says you get an automatic six-month extension; read the news item of 31 July 2026 for the details.

For the state exam your result appears in MijnDUO from 15:00 on the date shown in the exam schedule. You also get it by e-mail and post. The certificates and the diploma never expire.

What this means for how you prepare

Count backwards from the date you want. If it is the state exam, book about eight weeks ahead. For A2, book more than six weeks ahead. Then fill the weeks in between with practice that looks like the exam.

  • Do the official practice exams. DUO has them for the A2 parts and KNM, and the state exam has free practice exams online. They show you the screens before the day.
  • Practise without your phone. At the state exam you cannot have any digital device, so get used to working without one.
  • Time yourself. Each part has a time limit. Practise inside it.

inburgeringcoach is an independent course. It is not part of DUO or any municipality, and it cannot book or change your exam. The page about the inburgering exam shows how each part works, and what the exams cost explains the fees and the loan.
